About the course
This intensive course in music theory has been developed in consultation with the Malmö School of Music and is based on available practice exams. The course covers two semesters where you study ABRSM levels 1-4. During the course, you will have several opportunities to practice writing music theory exams, giving you a comprehensive preparation for the entrance exams.
Course content
Our intensive course covers three main areas:
- Musicology
You will learn basic concepts and terminology in music theory, including:
- Barrel names, octave names, prefixes and intervals
- Major and minor scales in different keys
- Different time signatures
- Chords and chord identification
- Theorem
Gain a deep understanding of how music is constructed to sound good, with a focus on:
- Litigation
- Functional analysis and ladder analysis
- Crowded and dispersed location
- Aural science
Train your ear to identify musical elements, such as:
- Hearing and singing all intervals
- Hearing and singing broken chords
- Plank chord progressions (listen and write down chords)
- Plank melodies (listen and write down the melody)
Course literature
The course uses the following books:
- Eric Taylor: ABRSM 1, ABRSM 2, ABRSM 3, ABRSM 4
Prerequisites
The course is aimed at students with a basic knowledge of music theory. If you are a beginner, we recommend our Music Theory course at a normal study pace, where each part (ABRSM 1-4) is studied over 1-2 semesters. After each part, there is the option to take the ABRSM exam online.
