Our electric bass course covers everything from basic techniques such as fingering and tone production, to more advanced techniques such as slap bass, harmonics and improvisation. Once you have been playing for a while and feel comfortable with your instrument, we also offer the opportunity to play in an ensemble. Who is the electric bass course for?
The course is aimed at children from 8 years old and adults. No prior knowledge is required.
During your basic lessons at Malmö Musikskola we will work with:
- Instrument knowledge: You will learn the basics of string names, how to tune the bass and how the volume and tone knobs work.
- Note reading: In order to be able to orient yourself more easily through a note picture, we will go through all the barrel names and where these are located on the bass fingerboard. You will then get to practice your note reading through various exercises.
- Tablature: In many cases, it is difficult to find sheet music for music such as rock and pop. In such cases, it can be useful to be able to read tablature or "tabs". Here you will learn how these work and practice playing by them.
- Rhythms: We will work with all note values and you will practice playing different rhythms as well as time signatures.
- Scales: Here we work with different scales and how they can be used for e.g. playing fills or solos.
- Chords: During the bass lessons we will work on how to play different chords on the electric bass. This is mainly done through arpeggios which means breaking up the chords and playing them note by note.
- Ear: You will work with your bass teacher to develop your ear and try to pluck different songs and bass lines. This will be done both using your electric bass and singing.
- Technique: Here we work with the technique, both in the left and right hand. We will go through alternate plucking, raking, slap, pick play and hammer ons/pull offs.
- Improvisation: We will go through how you can use your knowledge of scales, chords and rhythms to improvise.
- Playing songs: Of course, we will try to incorporate song playing into much of the teaching.
- Writing your own bass lines: You will learn and practice writing your own bass lines to different types of music.
- Warm-up and ergonomics: To avoid injuries, we will go through how you should sit and hold your electric bass in the most ergonomic way possible. In addition to this, you will also learn different warm-up exercises.
At Malmö Musikskola we believe that continuity is crucial for success in music studies.
Unlike other subjects that are naturally used in everyday life, music requires regular practice and guidance, especially at the beginning of studies.
Therefore, we offer a planned study program of 40 lessons over a year, with 17 lessons taking place in the autumn semester and 17 in the spring semester. The remaining lessons are flexibly distributed, mostly during the summer.
Our approach provides students with a stable structure and the opportunity to progress continuously, while enjoying breaks in the summer, as well as during the fall, sports, Christmas and Easter holidays. This balance ensures that each student can progress and achieve their goals without losing touch with their studies for extended periods.
